Father, Dad, Daddy, Abba

My name is Danny Kim. I picked up a few nicknames in my lifetime. I have a Korean name, I have a few degrees, and earned some titles. Yet, there is one title I cherish above all of them, “Father.” There is something that in that title that connects me to others in ways I can not fully explain. The connection I have with my own father is not a deep one, but somewhere in my most innermost part, my father is there. There is a lineage, there is an offspring. “Father” shows me where I came from, what I can be even when I am gone. There is something truly profound about that title.

It is no wonder that our God took upon Himself, the title of Father. He speaks to us in the very fabric of our existence. Inside our heart of hearts, we have something that truly explains who are. We are a son, we are a daughter, we are so much more than a single thought or idea, we belong to something far greater. A larger place in life and existence, we belong to an infinite being that gifts us with a love of a Father.
1 John 3:1 – “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”
As we come to a day we celebrate that patriarchal service, let us celebrate all the men who have “been there.” Men who didn’t walk away from their responsibility or from their history. Fatherhood is such confusing role, who really understands what it is all about? The secret to this mystery lies with our Heavenly Father. In God can be found our role as fathers, our place in this world.

Thank you all you papas, and to men that have taken people under them, to mentor our future generations. Thank you Fathers for heeding the call of leadership, and going forward to places unknown. What a privilege to have a God as our Father, and what an honor to be called a “Dad.”
