Shiny Things

I once had someone sell me a fake gold ring. I knew by the price it was too good to be true. I bought it anyway. I had the ring tested and sure enough it was a fake. What is it about gold and riches? Why has the possibility of becoming rich become such an obsession for us? There is overwhelming evidence that money does not buy happiness. Million dollar lottery winners have been interviewed and in almost every case, they were not happier a year after they won the lottery.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Mathew. 6:33

I drove by a billboard the other day. It read “Follow your heart”. It sounds nice, until you realize that our heart is deceitful. We don’t know what we want. In many ways when we follow our heart we end up worse off. I believe the first step in finding our joy in life, is to admit we don’t know how to get it. When we realize that we don’t really have any answers, and that God does have the answers, there is only one path for us. Follow God. Life has many distractions, but Jesus tell us that He is the Way.

Shiny things always get our attention, but trusting in Jesus will give us the joy and riches we are truly seeking.
